Welcome to My Blog

First off a little background about me and why I have started this blog. I am a keen photographer, a semi professional, who is always looking for opportunities to take photographs. But I also work as  Product Marketing Director for Alfresco.

Alfresco is a UK based Open Source software company. We build Open Source Enterprise Content Management software, and as such are possibly the leader in what we do. As an Open Source company building a network (or community) is key to being successful - and we are successful (Alfresco currently has a HubSpot ranking of 98.8 out of 100 – which is very high).

So I got to thinking...

  • How hard would it be to start from scratch?
  • Could I build a new network / community focused on Photography?
  • How could I marry my love with Photography with my love of marketing?
  • What would I learn?
  • Would this help others?

So this blog is something of an experiment. Here I am going to share my experiences of starting from scratch. During this experiment I will build a web site and associated blog, use social networking tools (Twitter, Facebook, etc.), develop Search Engine Optimisation techniques  and of course use Google. As an Open Source advocate I will also try to use Open Source tools. This blog is being written on a Ubuntu Linux based netbook, with drafts being saved in Google docs (but this is another side project that I will share with you later).

I plan to use the blog for two purposes:

  • Share my love of Photography - I will talk about what I am doing, photographs I am taking, share my images, discuss things that interest me and other photographers work, etc. etc
  • Share my progress - All professional photographers need to be found, build a community and get themselves known. Hopefully I can share my Marketing experience and be of some help

Thank you for reading my first ever blog entry. In true community style I would love to know what you think and I hope that you will follow along and we can learn together.
